Crochet Basket Weave Blanket

We’ve had a relatively slow start to the year here at PGD, basically to take stock (literally!!) and plan our designs and collections for the coming year ahead of craft market season over the summer.

The first few months of the year are the perfect time to reset after the busy festive season, research, plan and get excited about what’s to come.

On the crochet side of the business this has meant experimenting with texture and technique. I am loving stitches which look beautiful but create depth to the designs and I am building the collection around that theme.

First up is this basket weave crochet stitch which I am using to design the latest in the baby blanket collection. Soft, cosy and an interesting pattern effect.

Of course, it is also versatile and works well for our home collection of throws and cushions and I did indeed use it as an embellishment on a red velvet cushion recently.

One of the best things about using this stitch is even though it looks intricate it is actually super easy to build row on row once you get into a rhythm with it.

Pattern Outline – UK Stitch Terms

  • Start with a foundation chain for your desired width. This is best done in multiples of 8 plus 7

  • Row 1: Skip 2 chain counts and treble into 3rd stitch and then all the way across the row

  • Row 2: Chain 2, Front Post Treble around 4 stitches, Back Post Treble around 4 stitches and keep alternating across the row. Chain 2 and turn

  • Row 3: Repeat Row 2

  • Row 4: Change the sequence to start Back Post Treble to build the alternating effect

  • Keep repeating above until you get to desired size.

In US terms, replace Treble for Double Crochet – same stitch, different term.

I love the look of the end result and I am excited to share it with you all. This one is almost complete and we will have a stock of them available soon.

The soft neutral colour makes it the perfect addition to any nursery or as a gift for a newborn or baby shower.

More designs in the works so watch this space.
